Chesed's Order - Giveaway!

Chesed (ke’-sed) is a Hebrew word meaning “loving favor.”

Chesed’s Order, by J. Aaron Culpepper, is a Christmas story about Chesed (ke’-sed), an ordinary angel who hears there are orders to herald the birth of the King. It seems the angel hosts received these orders without him. Why would he be left out? Could it be that Archangel Michael has a special order just for him?

First of all, I must say, though this book is fashioned in the ‘look’ of a children’s book, this short story seems far too confusing for young readers. The way the sentences are configured make for an awkward read, as if this story was written by someone whose first language is not English. Also, the story is inundated with adverbs, which I find distracting.

The illustrations, by Benjamin Schipper, are unique and colorful, and filled with detail.

Though this book shares a sweet story, it is a challenging read for any age (due to sentence structure) and is unlikely to hold a young child’s interest. Some readers may enjoy deciphering a story with an unusual structure, but I didn’t.

Overall, I appreciate the message this fictional account conveys—a run of the mill angel being given the important task of heralding Christ’s birth—but due to the way the sentences are arranged, I give it a 2-star rating.
