“I’m over here!” I barked. “Ruff, ruff, ruff!”
We as parents, grandparents, or childcare givers all love books that provide engaging learning opportunities for our young ones. With summertime fun right around the corner, Barkley’s Great Escape, provides both an entertaining story and water safety.
The author, Wanda Wyont, and illustrator, Brittany Huskey, collaborate seamlessly on delivering a lively, colorful tale of a curious yellow lab named Barkley. Barkley’s curiosity gets him in a heap of trouble when he gets into a swimming pool to cool off and then realizes he can’t find a way to get back out! With the help of neighbors who hear his frantic barks he’s able to escape, and learns not to get back in the pool without adult supervision and a life jacket.
Barkley himself tells the story in first person. He is a charming main character and exemplifies a childlike curiosity. The lively illustrations are fun and detailed, adding to the fun.
Two pages in the back of the book are dedicated to discussion questions, creative activities, safety tips for adults and children to participate in, and ways to love and care for your pet.
Barkley’s Great Escape is a wonderful addition to any child’s library, especially young animal lovers. The hardback cover and semi-glossy pages are sturdy, colorful and amusing.
