Bittersweet

Image
My memory of the many afternoons I spent at Flat Rocks that summer is long and lingering, bound up with the reassuring sense of things always having been the way they were, and the belief that they would always be that way. ~Quote from Bittersweet Mabel Dagmar is invited by her wealthy college roommate, Ev Winslow, to spend the summer at Bittersweet cottage on her family compound in Vermont. Mabel finally feels wanted, valued, and loved, but after she discovers the ugly truths festering beneath the Winslow’s exquisite exterior, she’s forced to make choices that change her life forever. Bittersweet is an unsettling, riveting, and mysterious coming-of-age story, chock-full of strained friendships, first loves, family secrets, and scandalous discoveries. I was quickly sucked into the story and became as fascinated with Ev Winslow and her bizarre family as Mabel was. The author, Miranda Beverly-Whittemore, does a superb job of creating a palpable setting. The Bittersweet c

The Waiting

Image
Look Inside the book HERE . The Waiting is a poignant, unforgettable journey. Minka’s innocent life is spun out of control when she is assaulted as a teenager. This true story is heartbreaking, but uplifting, in the author weaves God’s love and healing throughout. Good things can come from tragic circumstances, reward can come from patience, and God’s love, acceptance, forgiveness, and triumph encourages us to have faith. I love books that incorporate history, and these pages transported to the times gone by. War can be illustrated in many ways, but not more powerfully than from within. As far as the mechanics of this story – the flow is flawless, the writing is superb, and the emotion is mountainous. I’m left satisfied, yet wanting—for more from this author. Look Inside the book HERE . Sometimes it's the little things in life that make big impacts. This book is little, simple, and fun. There aren't any bells and whistles or deep philosophical studies…but the questions posed are insightful and (as is the premise of the book) gets conversations started. I found this book interesting and enjoyable. During leisure time, why not unlock some of your mate's mysteries by asking touching or amusing questions you hadn't thought of on your own? 50 Things You Need To Know About Heaven

Image
This book was even better than expected. The common questions posed and the author’s conversational tone delivering the answers is easy to comprehend. Far more than just inspirational, this book is educational—the greatest lessons for life, and the life-after. Here is an example of some of the questions answered (with sound Biblical answers) in this 144 page book:             Who goes to heaven?             What will we do in heaven?             Will animals be in heaven?             What does the Bible say about hell? There is a wealth of information on each page. A question is posed at the beginning of each chapter, followed by an inspirational contemporary ‘story’ that relates, a clear, easy to understand answer, and verses listed at the end for further reading. This book can easily be read in a day, but is a keeper for referring back to. It would also be a great gift for new Christians. Kudos to Dr. John Hart for answering these questions in an unc

For Such A Time

Image
Look Inside the book HERE . This is one of the best books I’ve ever read. For Such A Time has moved me like no other. A heart-wrenching, soul-pricking, life changing read. This story showcases the cruelties of WWII and the Nazis brutality, hatred and lack of compassion toward the Jews. It also illustrates how faith, love, and perseverance can overcome hardships that seem insurmountable. What I loved about this book: * The story. It was inspired by Esther’s story in the Bible. Just as Esther was chosen to save her people, Hadassah must find the courage and faith to do the same. Her plight is a difficult one, and her journey became my own. * The emotions. I felt a myriad of emotions. My jaw clenched in anger, my heart wrenched in agony, and I wept for the atrocities that were carried out. I smelled the fear, and felt the passions as well as punishments. * The characters. They are all flawed, some more than others. I sympathized with Hadassah’s (Stell

Daisies Are Forever

Image
Look Inside the book HERE . I’ll start out my review by saying - this is the best book I’ve read in quite some time. I’m not overly familiar with stories with a WWII setting, but after reading…no, experiencing this story—I’ll eagerly seek them out. Liz Tolsma is a superb writer with a strong ability to set a scene with such clarity that I could hear, smell, taste, touch, feel and see the battle-raged cities and battered victims of WWII. I felt a sense of community with Gisela and her family and friends. I sympathized with each character’s plight, their yearnings and fears. I reached the limits of my emotions—crying, laughing, aching and sighing—within the pages of this book. Daisies Are Forever , inspired by true events, is much more than a romance. It deals with history, emotion, loyalty, family dynamics, realities of war, violence, loss, pain, fear, forgiveness, spirituality and redemption. Simply said, I couldn’t put this book down. I didn’t want the st

Mind Calm

Image
Look Inside the book HERE . This book shares, in great detail, the simplistic techniques and benefits of meditation. By simplifying our lives, quieting our thoughts, and focusing on the positive aspects of our lives, we can live with more clarity and peace. Be still. Those two short words make such an impact. We can soften our daily walk and enjoy more meaning by practicing this. As a Christian, I would’ve liked the importance of prayer mentioned, seeing as God is the supplier of peace. But, either way, the principles in this book are powerful and motivating. Cover: Like it Title: Like it Publisher: Hay House, UK. When A Man Loves A Woman

Image
Look Inside the book HERE . “And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.” –Genesis 2:18 This is a book every male should read before delving into marriage. It illustrates Biblical principles on how a man should treat and love a woman. Too often, men carry the mentality that women are less than them, servants of their needs. This is far from what the Bible teaches. They are to love them as Christ loves. Husbands are physical protectors, supporters, and providers of their wives—suppliers of love. A wife is their treasure, and should be revered as such. There’s nothing chauvinistic or primitive about this book. It’s entertaining, as well as informative and inspiring. This book, coupled with When a Woman Loves a Man , would be a unique and thoughtful gift for newly engaged or married couples. It’s also a stimulating relationship refresher for older couples. When A Woman Loves A Man

Image
Look Inside the book HERE . “Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.” –Proverbs 31:10-12 This booklet is informative, inspiring, and unpretentious. Oftentimes I hear the patronizing adage that women are less than men—in a sense they are servants of their husband’s needs. This is far from Biblical teachings. Women are to be protective of their husband’s emotional needs—loving and supporting them, and being their helper. There are only 2 ‘helpers’ mentioned in the Bible, God and women. A wife is a treasure. This book, coupled with When a Man Loves a Woman , would be a unique and thoughtful gift for newly engaged or married couples. It’s also entertaining, encouraging, and relationship-refreshing for older couples as well. Cover: Love it Title: Love it Publisher: Lift Every Voice Pages:

Slimming Meals That Heal

Image
Look Inside the book HERE . Slimming Meals That Heal contains three sections: Research (Explains the science of losing weight, and how hormones, emotions, and inflammation are linked to weight gain.) A Plan (Reveals problems with certain foods and why you should stop eating them, as well as recommending substitutions.) Recipes (The bulk of the book – menus for healthy eating, with gorgeous, full-page illustrations.) Julie Daniluk (a registered holistic nutritionist) uses a unique approach in this book. She not only provides delicious recipes, but also informs her readers what certain ingredients do to the human body, what to avoid, and how non-food items in life (hormones, allergies, inflammation and moods) can affect weight and well-being. I found this book inspiring and informational. Much more than I expected. Highly recommended—particularly if you’re dealing with health issues. Cover: Like it Title: Like it Publisher: Hay House, Inc.
