If You Were Me and Lived In South Korea

“So now you see, if you were me, how life in South Korea could really be.”

If You Were Me and Lived in…South Korea is the third entry in the educational “If You Were Me and Lived In…” book series—and my favorite so far. It takes readers on a journey to South Korea, with a map in the beginning that shows the location of South Korea, and colorful illustrations depicting Asian boys and girls.

This non-fiction series awakens an appreciation and hunger for history in young readers. Not only is the reader entertained and educated, but also builds his/her vocabulary with words from each particular culture.

If You Were Me and Lived in…South Korea displays the distinctive features of this interesting country. From living in the capital city of Seoul, the largest city in South Korea, to visiting Min Sok Chon (the Korean Folk Village, readers will be exposed to many things they may have never heard of before. They may be surprised to learn that the ancient martial art of self-defense, Taekwondo, originated here.

As in the other books of the series, names of boys and girls (such as Minjoon and Jiwoo) currency (won) cultural foods (bulgogi) and toys (agi inhyeong) are described.

It’s essential to teach our children about the different cultures, beliefs, and environments our world is made up of. And what a joy it is that they will gain at least an impression of South Korea.

Some names or words, such as Jihoo (Gee-ho) and Seoul (S-oh-l) may be new to young readers, so the pronunciation page at the back of the book is helpful.

This series is recommended for young explorers who are curious about the world around them. The engaging and edifying books make unique gifts and constructive additions to any child’s bookshelf.
