Crochet Animal Rugs - Review

Image
I’m a creative person, so just about any kind of craft book interests me. This one is adorable, with fun crochet designs and simple to follow instructions. The pattern collections are youthful and colorful, and the completed animal designs are sure to add spunk to any child’s dΓ©cor. This is a crafty, creative, and cute crochet book. I’ve crocheted before, but it’s been awhile, so I’m glad the instructions are easy to follow. And the illustrations show exactly what the finished product will look like—which is extremely helpful. I don't have grandchildren yet, but I plan to prepare for them by creating some of these adorable designs. This is a well laid out book with a strong spine and pretty cover.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - Audiobook Review

Image
My Review:  I’m so pleased with this audio rendering of  The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.  I read this book as a young adult, and enjoyed revisiting the classic cast of characters. Times have changed so much from the early 1800s, both in obvious, and in more understated ways. The language used (racial slurs) though coarse, makes the story feel genuine, and the societal values and beliefs (racism and hypocrisy) authentic for the story’s time period. On a personal note, the racial slurs were so jarring and distracting. I understand that the language was historically accurate for the 1800s, but I can't stand to hear (or read) the 'n' word! Audio Narration: Theo Holland  is a superbly talented audiobook narrator! His southern vernacular and inflection really drew me into the story. He shifts between character voices effortlessly and convincingly—even the female voices.  Audio Production Quality:  The production quality of this audiobook is clear, with no distrac

Sunrise Cabin - Review

Image
Two very different people… One very special place. Sunrise Cabin  is another delightful Hallmark tale! Paige Reynolds’s rented cabin west of Denver is a charming respite from life’s troubles. She relishes in her two-bedroom cabin home, prayerfully listing the many things she’s thankful for while soaking in each sunrise from the stone patio. What a beautiful tradition! I immediately connected to Paige and her optimistic, quirky ways. Her curious clothing choices are fun, her cheery personality makes her likable, and her dreams of being a published children’s author are exciting. She’s a memorable character with seemingly endless sunniness. (I hope to incorporate her  clean slate Monday  routine into my weekly practice!) Dylan Cain, an investment banker, has a completely different disposition. He is detached, focused on work, and living a negligible, unfulfilling existence. Yet his cynical world begins to shift with a chance meeting at a coffee shop. He’s heartened

The Road to Edmond - Indie Movie Review

Image
This review is a little different, in that I’m reviewing a viewing experience, rather than a book or CD. Such fun! I expected to be entertained, roll my eyes, and let out a few giggles, while watching  The Road to Edmond.  I certainly hadn't anticipated needing tissues nearby. What a surprise! Actually,  The Road to Edmond  is  full  of surprises. Yes, it’s a comedic indie film, but its roots go much, much deeper than that. It incorporates themes of acceptance and faith into a fun and unexpected road-trip, and raises important questions that the characters, as well as viewers, might be surprised by. At the beginning of the movie, it was obvious to me the two actors were not professionals, but as the story progressed that mattered less and less. The plot is what moved the story forward, and the underlying message pricked a place in my heart. After all, doesn’t the importance of a movie, book, or story, lie in the way it makes you feel? The way it puts you on a new c

Review & Giveaway: Tori Kelly Audio CD!

Image
Giveaway Winner: JM! Congratulations! ~ Hiding Places ~ The first time I heard Tori Kelly’s voice was in a Nationwide television commercial. (Watch it here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpfNY2_6Cto ) She has a smooth, compassionate quality to her voice that exudes substance and strength. In  Hiding Places   she delivers heart-touching spiritual lyrics with a Rhythm & Blues style. I don’t know what her musical background is, but I’m guessing she has had extensive training. Her voice is strong and her easygoing runs are controlled—like a mix of Corrine Bailey Rae and Christina Aguilera. The CD includes 8 songs, each with its own unique style and flair. Some are pop-like, with buoyant beats and feel-good lyrics, and others are more tender and soulful in nature.  Three of my favorites are  Psalm 42, Questions,  and  Soul’s Anthem:   Psalm 42  is a beautiful song of worship, inviting the Lord to “fill this space with heaven like a flood.” Questions  pricks t
