When it comes to preventing premature aging, you want to reduce cortisol on a daily basis and keep reducing it with positive lifestyle practices. Good nutrition is a powerful way to do this.
Q2. WHY DO YOU RECOMMEND BEING MORE CONSCIOUS OF YOUR EATING HABITS WHEN YOU ARE STRESSED?
Eating when you are stressed impacts the body’s ability to digest food and deprives your skin of the nutrients it needs to stay healthy, strong and vital. When we are suffering from stress overload, blood and oxygen flow to the stomach decreases, making it more difficult for our bodies to digest food and absorb the nutrients efficiently.
This means we need to be discerning about what and how we eat. Eating on the run when we are time poor is a recipe for poor digestion and if we are eating low nutrient food, this is a double dose of stress for the body that does nothing good for our health or our skin.
To support better digestion before we eat, it is worth taking the time to relax the body with some deep breathing. This supports a state of ‘rest and digest’ when we sit down to eat.
Q3. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE VEGETABLES FOR FEEDING THE SKIN?
Spinach and kale are great for the skin. They are rich in Vitamin C, which helps boost collagen. However, something that is not commonly known is that to reap the full skin benefits from ‘greens’ you need virgin olive oil. This helps assimilate and carry the nutrients throughout the body. So consider pouring a little extra virgin olive oil over your greens when you are ready to serve them to ensure you are getting all of their skin-building nutrients.
Q4. THERE IS A CURRENT CRAZE THAT ADVOCATES THE BENEFITS OF BONE BROTH. DOES IT SUPPORT THE SKIN TO LOOK YOUNGER?
I am a firm believer in the benefits of bone broth. In fact I like to call it a beauty broth! While it is tasty to drink, it also does amazing things for the skin. The process of cooking the bones breaks down their collagen and forms gelatin, which is full of amino acids, glycine, proline and hydroxyproline.
Our body absorbs these amino acids and uses them to create new collagen in our skin. This improves moisture levels, skin elasticity and firmness and helps to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
Keep in mind that the best way to boost collagen is to eat the nutrients that protect and stimulate collagen production.
Q5. WHAT IS ONE OF THE VERY BEST THINGS TO EAT IF YOUR SKIN IS VERY DRY AND YOU HAVE WRINKLES APPEARING?
Eating fish is a powerful way to help hydrate, plump up the skin and smooth out fine lines from the inside out. Salmon, sardines and tuna are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids. Fatty acids are a good healthy fat that protects the skin cells and supports the structure of the skin. Eating food full of fatty acids or taking them as supplements is essential for healthy skin, as the body cannot make them on its own.
Adding fish to our diet 3-4 times a week is a great way to top up our intake of fatty acids, adding moisture to our skin and helping to reduce fine lines.
Tip: if you are eating sardines I recommend purchasing those that are canned in water, as they are more likely to retain all the nutrients.
Q6. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING TO COOK?
I love to cook food that is simple, tasty and quick to make, that delivers big flavours and health benefits, and also supports the body to counteract premature aging.
One of my favourite dishes to make is a curry with all of the condiments. It is hearty and delicious, but most importantly the spices are full of anti oxidants and skin building nutrients.
It is a dish with great versatility, as you can add most vegetables, lentils or beans, and any meat or meat substitute, making it something that most people can enjoy.
