Q1. WHY DO YOU BELIEVE THAT DEEP BREATHING IS ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL WAYS TO REDUCE STRESS?
When we breathe deeply it sends a message to the brain, which tells the body to relax. This reduces our heart rate and lowers our blood pressure, which relieves tension and reduces stress. The best part is that you don’t need any fancy equipment; you can do deep breathing exercises anytime, anywhere and at no cost!
There are many different breathing exercises, so it is finding the ones that you enjoy and work best for you. But regardless of what breathing technique you use, it is important to be conscious of your breathing patterns and the impact it has on your body.
My breathing method is simple and can reduce stress in two minutes, and the added benefit is that it reduces cortisol, (the wrinkle-causing hormone), at the same time, so we can feel good and look our best at the same time.
Q2. WHAT ARE SOME FOODS YOU WOULD RECOMMEND EATING WHEN UNDER STRESS?
The stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol create havoc in the body over time and induce premature skin aging. However there are some incredible foods that help us to reduce stress.
A healthy diet can help counteract the impact of stress by lowering blood pressure and strengthening our immune system. Something as simple eating a bowl of oatmeal in the morning can help calm the brain by boosting levels of serotonin. Complex carbs like wholegrain breads, brown rice and wholegrain pasta also help you feel balanced by stabilizing your blood sugar levels.
Fruits like oranges, lemons and kiwi fruits contain a high Vitamin C content. Studies reveal that Vitamin C not only strengthens the immune system, but can also reduce levels of the stress hormones.
Foods that are magnesium rich such as spinach, lima beans, okra, squash, artichokes, kale and peas can help counteract the impacts of stress. While thebOmega-3 fatty acids found in fish such as tuna, sardines and salmon help prevent spikes in the stress hormones.
Snacking on some unsalted almonds that hold B vitamins, helps boost the immune system, especially during stressful times.
Ensuring that we incorporate these foods into our day-to-day eating helps us decrease our stress levels and increase the health of our skin – all of which helps us counteract premature aging.

Q4. WHY DO YOU RECOMMEND THAT PEOPLE DRINK WATER WHEN THEY ARE STRESSED AND ALSO BEFORE A MEAL?
Drinking a glass of water relaxes the nervous system and studies have shown that drinking a glass of water before eating suppresses our appetite, supporting us not to overeat. This is also important because when we over eat we stress the body, causing it to release the stress hormone norepinephrine, which increases our blood pressure and our heart rate. We want to eat when we are relaxed and in a state of ‘rest and digest’ and something as simple as drinking a glass of water before we eat helps us do that.
