Marvellous Macey: The Delightful Days is a charming look into the life of a unique and happy little girl. Macey carries an exceptional air of joy, acceptance, and kindness around her. She endures hardships, but with her positive attitude, vivid imagination, and the comfort of loving helpers, she thrives.

This children’s book hints that there is much more to Macey’s story to be revealed in future books of the series, and I’ve no doubt those installments of this uplifting little girl will reveal sprinkles of hope and delight on every page.

1.       What inspired you to write this book?

The simple answer is my daughter Macey. She is the bravest and most resilient person I know. We had a long season that was purely about survival as she battled childhood cancer and also became ill with a bacterial infection. It became septic, she was put on life support, and we had to move to a different city as we watched her fight for her life.

Macey is our little miracle. She inspires me to live each day to the fullest and is the greatest example of hope I know. If she can go through what she went through and come out as such a delighted, fun-loving, and perseverant girl then I can press on and conquer” all things in life.

2.       How did you do research for this book?

This book is so representative of my everyday interactions and observations of my daughter, Macey. But that is not to say I didnt have to pay close attention or do research. I would write things down all the time on whatever was handy - the back of receipts, sticky notes, or my phone - in order to remember something cute or book-worthy that Macey did or said.

I have a terrible memory so my purse, vehicle, desk, and journals are a mess of thoughts and a mix of random notes that I hope serve a purpose in my storytelling at some point (if I can find them in the clutter!).

My research also included re-reading past blogs and journal entries of my own to refresh my memory and really connect with what I wanted readers to feel after they met Macey.

3.       If youre a mom-writer, how do you balance your time?

The most interesting thing about my book is that it really came to life when we were in lockdown during March 2020. The schools were shut down and all three of my kids were distance-learning. I dont even have an office with a door.

I ended up setting up a makeshift desk in our garage (which is a gym) and after doing morning school’ with the kids I would put a do not disturb” note on the door and cross my fingers.

The kids had a little extra electronic time, but overall I had to learn to work in a disjointed fashion. That is not my preference, but is the reality of balancing my book dream with being a mom-writer.

Now I am able to work a good portion of each day (M-F) because the kids are in school. However, my daughter Macey has special needs. Fortunately, we have an fantastic support team of therapists, but I have to give quite a bit of time to managing that team and appointments.

I do not always feel like I balance my time perfectly, but I grab any opportunities I have to work while taking conscious breaks to read with my kids or play a game. I believe my kids will learn confidence by watching me pursue something outside of my mom-hat’ tasks.

4.       Do you ever get writers block? What helps you overcome it?

All the time. The best strategy I have (that I dont always do!) is to walk away. My mom always says that the back burner was created for a reason. I have started reminding myself to back-burner-it” whenever Im going in circles and its no longer fruitful to stare at the words.

My process seems to often be a mix of notes and thoughts in different places (laptop, journal, sticky notes, etc) - almost like I am writing in my head and one day I sit down and the story just comes.”

5.       Favorite travel spot?

Our lakehouse about 4 hours from home! This is new for our family, but is reminiscent of childhood for my husband and I. We each grew up going to our family cabin (or cottage if youre from the East, it seems) and we dreamed of being able to provide our children with that experience.

The stars aligned in the fall 2020 and now I look forward to spending as much time there as possible. We actually celebrated Christmas there and it was magical.’

6.       Whats the most courageous thing youve ever done?

I had to draw on courage I didnt even know I had to be a caregiver to my daughter for the years of cancer treatment, chemo, and hospital stays. Courage was also needed to show up for my two boys despite living with the anxiety and fear of having a medically-fragile child.

Every time I had to hold Macey down for an important procedure or watch her in pain, I had to be courageous.

When we had to pack up in the middle of the night and return to the hospital with a fever, I had to find courage and strength.

And, finding the ability to persevere in the face of unknown trajectories - then and now - takes courage.

7.       What is something quirky about you?

How do I pick just one? I love fine-dining, but am known to sneak gummy candy or mini eggs into the restaurant in my purse, because I prefer a less-refined dessert experience.
