Alicia has finally entered a new world of technology when her parents give her a tablet for her birthday. She has watched and listened to her friends who have already been enjoying the games and apps in a connected world that Alicia has yet to experience. Until now. But using technology can bring a set of challenges that are new to both Alicia and her parents. Understanding the different apps and games and how to use them properly can be tricky. Will Alicia know how to use it in a way that is fun and allows her to connect with her friends while being safe and secure? Both her and her parents will face the excitement and challenges together as she jumps headfirst into using her new tablet.

Alicia Connected: The Big Gift is an entertaining and informative children’s story that touches on security concerns for children participating in online games, profiles, games, social media sites, etc.

Alicia is excited about her new birthday gift. She finally owns her very own tablet. Her parents teach her to be cautious with online strangers, just as she would with strangers at the park. They supervise her usage and encourage her to come to them with questions or if anyone sends her friend requests or makes her feel the slightest bit uncomfortable.

This chapter book isn’t strictly about lessons on technology (though that’s a key purpose of the story.) Alicia and her friends have fun at school and on their bus rides home, sharing stories about a fun community game they play on their tablets.

Alicia shows great restraint, which is a bit unrealistic for a child of her age (in my opinion) with the magnetic pull online games and technology in general has on kids. Alicia sets an impressive example of someone responsible and compliant, accepting the parameters her parents have set up, and she stays safe by doing so.

  1. This looks like a good book for young adults getting into technology. When Alicia gets her tablet and learns of the joys and cautions that go with it.
