The charming tale told in Amal the Thirsty Gamal is for every young person who might be anxious about how they are viewed by those around them (and yes, camels care about that too!). For so long, our little hero has been hearing taunts and jeers and thinking negative things about himself, his looks, and especially his little hump. But—oh, brace yourselves! — because Wise Men are traveling with Amal’s special caravan, and when one of them speaks up around the campfire one night, everything changes for little Amal!

I love the whimsical title of Amal the Thirsty Gamal, and the way this Christmas tale draws readers in with its fun rhymes and illustrations.

This is a sweet, fun, and meaningful story. It shares a story of a small-humped camel/gamal named Amal. He feels different and less useful and productive than the other camels because he looks different. Young readers undoubtedly will empathize with Amal, for most of us at one time or another have felt self-conscious, less important, or less significant than others. But readers will realize, as Gamal does, that each one of us are unique, special, and good enough. I love when Amal realizes what others had assumed about him wasn’t true.

Another facet of this story is the telling of the Christmas story, and the journey of the wise men and others to honor the new King, Jesus. In fun rhymes, readers journey along with Amal and the others and learn of the gifts they bring.

I enjoyed this imaginative tale of embracing our differences and finding our true selves. Amal is a memorable Gamal, and this is a sweet and evocative storybook.
