Popper is a sweet little woodpecker who is trying to find a new home. Now that he is grown, it’s time for him to leave the nest and find a home of his own. The first book in the Popper and Friends series, follow along as Popper explores different options and gets helpful advice from his friends.
In Popper Finds a New Home, Popper is the cutest little woodpecker who realizes he’s outgrown his bed and must leave his parents' house to find a new home. His parents support him, wishing him well on his new adventure.
Popper looks high and low for a place to build his home but nothing seems right. He searches out the pond where bullfrogs live, the chicken coop where chickens live, the barn where owls live, windowsills, streetlights, and utility poles, but none of these places are the right place for him to build a home. Finally, Filbert the Squirrel suggests the perfect spot—the trees near his parents’ home, and he eagerly gets to work on a home that fits him just right.
I like how Popper doesn’t get too discouraged and he keeps his spirits (and search) up. And the illustrations are simply adorable!
Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book. My review was not influenced.
What was the inspiration for Popper Finds a New Home?
It goes back to my childhood – growing up, my dad would talk about a woodpecker in our neighborhood that would peck a metal pole. He would joke that the woodpecker was giving itself an awful headache. I used to think that maybe the woodpecker was communicating with its friends by banging its beak into that metal pole. At some point I thought that the woodpecker was looking for somewhere to burrow because it needed a new home, and that is how I came up with the idea for the story.
What’s the message you hope children will get from this story?
I believe that it is really important for everyone to have a strong social network between family and friends. I hope children recognize that it is helpful to ask people they know for advice/help. We can all learn a lot from those that are closest to us in our lives.
Will this turn into a series?
Yes, I plan to write more stories about Popper and his friends. I have some more ideas about stories where Popper is going to seek advice/help from his social network. Plus, now that Popper has a new home, he needs to host parties for his family and friends!!
Who’s your favorite character in the story?
I like them all, but I think the illustration of Filbert (the squirrel) is my favorite. The illustrator that I worked with, Yulia, did an amazing job! But, Filbert makes me smile every time I see his chubby cheeks and the acorn tucked under his arm….
