Our Lunar New Year is a unique children’s book by Yobe Qiu. It showcases a diverse cast of characters. These multi-cultural families observe the Lunar New Year in their own special ways.

For the Chinese Spring Festival (Chun Jie) Xiao Mi and her family gather together to eat a special meal of extra-luck fish, and that night they watch a Dragon Dance and fireworks show.

In Vietnam, Hang and her family celebrate the Vietnamese New Year (Têt) with drums and bells, watching a Lion Dance, and visiting the temple before eating and watching fireworks.

The book also features families celebrating Seollal (Korean), Songkran (Thai), and Diwali (Indian) in their own customary ways. The colorful, detailed illustrations add so much to the learning experience.

I love the diversity in this book, displaying the celebratory practices of people from different backgrounds. What a wonderful way to educate young readers about the beauty of diversity.

Meet the Author:

Yobe is an educator, entrepreneur and mom who lives in NYC. As an educator, she focused on teaching families to embrace love, diversity and different cultures. Through the years working in the classrooms and closely with other educators, she noticed the lack of multi-cultural resources that represented children of color. That is when Yobe decided to create multicultural children stories that feature Asian children, families and cultures! Yobe loves spending time with her daughter, reading to children and taking long walks during the day!
