Songs of Suffering

Image
25 Hymns and Devotions for Weary Souls Joni Eareckson Tada _____  ❤ _____ My Review   I enjoy gospel music and Christian hymns, and  Songs of Suffering  by Joni Eareckson Tada showcases many of the songs I love.  It is well with my soul ,  Standing on the promises , and  When we all get to Heaven  are just a few of them.   Suffering is universal, but how we cope or deal with it is what makes a difference. These songs help us heal and rise above adversity, pain, and other obstacles. I learned about Joni and her injury when my mother and I watched a film about her accident when I was a child, and she made a huge impression on me. She still does.   I love how this book is organized. Each chapter focuses on a hymn including the  lyrics and music composition, verse of scripture, devotional lesson, prayer or statement, and a full-page photo. The frame-worthy photographs are of various locations along the West Coast—gorgeous trees, skies, flowers, waterfalls, the ocean, and even Joni.   The

Review: What They Don't Know

Image
_____  ❤ _____ My Review   Wow!  What They Don’t Know  is certainly out of my normal reading genres. I wanted to venture out to a new author (Susan Furlong) and a rarely visited genre, so I chose this book. Now I know why I don’t read a lot in the psychological thriller category. I get creeped out easily! But wow. In a good way.   I love a story that makes me feel something – whether happy, sad, sympathetic, insightful, or even fearful. And seeing the world through Mona’s eyes made me feel a lot. Porcelain dolls have always given me the heebie-jeebies, so that mixed with a murdered woman, a questionable suspect, and the psychological undertones made me sleep with a nightlight.    This is a nervy, unnerving, twisting, intriguing, page-turning tale that grabs you from the first page and doesn’t let loose. I questioned everything and was kept guessing. I enjoyed the author’s unique writing style and hope to revisit her writing again. (Eek. Did I just say that?)   First Line:   The preda

GIVEAWAY and Review: The Florence Legacy

Image
_____  ❤ _____ My Review   I've visited Italy a few times and enjoyed the cultural nuances the author integrated. But   The Florence Legacy  is much more than a journey to Italy and its beautiful landscape, art, food, and culture. (Though these are huge plusses!) It carries themes of friendship, legacy, and most importantly - trusting God.   The characters (well, some of them) are easy to connect with. I liked Bree and it was easy to sympathize for all she was going through. The children were nicely developed and got under my skin. ha.    I loved the spiritual themes of letting go of fear and trusting in the Lord. I also enjoyed these women writers belonged to a writer’s group. Anytime writers, libraries, or love of books are included in a novel that’s extra exciting for me. There are several avenues stemming from this story, but they are interconnected nicely.   This Christian themed story includes friendship, family relationships, and romance, and isn’t action-packed and su

GIVEAWAY and Review: Crazy Joy

Image
_____  ❤ _____ My Review   Crazy Joy  is the second book I’ve read by Mary Katherine Backstroke. (I've also read her 2021 book, Holy Hot Mess.) I appreciate her writing style. Her conversational tone is packed with fun, wit, and whimsy. But the lighthearted atmosphere certainly doesn’t diminish the depth and value of her guidance.    In this book, MK helps readers discover ways to find peace, contentment, and joy by sharing her personal experiences and insight. And reading it is fun and entertaining. The  Tour Guide Takeaway  sections, serving as somewhat of a review at the close of each chapter, are a nice touch.   First Lines (Introduction):   As we set off together on this journey to joy, there’s something you need to know. I’m just a little bit…crazy. GIVEAWAY and Review: Reorganized Religion

Image
_____  ❤ _____ My Review   I love the conversational tone the author uses in  Reorganized Religion . The narrative doesn’t come across preachy, starchy, or heavy. Just a friend, spilling experiences and advice over a cup of coffee.    The introduction pulled me in immediately. It fit a situation in my current life so well that I couldn’t ignore it. The advice the author received from a friend rang true and I wanted to read more. So, I did. And I was hooked.   The book focuses on the organized church, or the un-structuring of it in a sense, but it also reveals so much about us as people, as a society of believers, that I pause at the relevance it shouts out. Things are changing. And we, the church, need a desire to plan a new path for the future.  I like how the author describes America’s changing  religious landscape.  I love the developing, positive, and hope-filled look at faith and community in a world of change. This is an inspiring read.   First Line (Introduction):   Not long i
