Publisher: Love Inspired Trade

Release Date: August 23, 2022

Genre: Amish-inspirational romance

Bestselling author Jo Ann Brown returns to the Amish community of Bliss Valley, where finding a new beginning means facing the past…

After losing both her fiancé and the happy life she anticipated, Amish maedel Grace Coffman is still stitching the pieces of her life back together. But between working in a quilting shop with an unscrupulous Englisch boss and caring for her ill parents, her threads keep unraveling. At first, the arrival of a kind, attractive stranger feels like a coincidence. But the more Grace learns about Joel Beachy and his story, the more their meeting seems like providence…

Joel's return to Bliss Valley—and the Plain people—is his last chance to redeem a life filled with missteps. Yet in Grace, Joel finds something he never imagined: trust, courage and even the possibility of hope. When Grace suddenly finds herself the guardian of her nephews, Joel sees an opportunity to keep two wayward boys from repeating his mistakes. But Joel's dark past isn't quite finished with him. And now he must pray that his new life is strong enough to withstand the pending storm of trouble…and secrets.

“Brown is a gifted writer who makes unforgettable characters that invite the reader to join them on their journey.” —Publishers Weekly bestselling author Marie E. Bast

Excerpt

Putting one weary foot in front of the other, Joel didn’t hurry along the road connected with one that would take him north. Somewhere along the way, he’d find a place to sleep. He hoped that would take his mind off his empty stomach and the bugs whining around his head. He hadn’t had anything but a cup of coffee for breakfast and nothing for lunch. It looked like he’d be enjoying the same nothing for supper.

Stop being a wimp, he told himself as he paused beneath a tree to enjoy its shadow that cut the strength of the relentless sun. He’d gone without eating after the car accident that had sent his friend Samuel to the hospital and his own life into a downward spiral. The pain of three broken fingers and a throbbing headache that hadn’t let up for almost a month had banished his appetite.

“Joel? Wait up!”

At the call from behind him, he looked over his shoulder.

Grace? Why was she running after him?

Hope danced for a single beat in his heart. He tamped it down as she slowed to a walk, continuing toward him. She wasn’t chasing after him to tell him she wanted to throw her door open wide for him so he’d have a place to stay tonight. Disappointment washed over him. Along with guilt that he’d spent the past two nights sleeping on someone else’s porch. Going there tonight was too much of a risk, because the family might come home on a Sunday evening so they were ready for another workweek. Grace stopped beside him and held out a basket. “Here.”

Joel didn’t reach to take it, though scents of strawberry jam and apple butter wafted from it. Two of his favorite foods. There had been strawberry jam in prison, but it hadn’t tasted like what his mamm had made each summer.

“What’s that?” he asked, even though he knew. Perhaps keeping the conversation going a few minutes more would allow him to stop thinking about how dire his current situation was.

It’ll be fine tomorrow when you get a job. He longed to believe that, but knew he’d somehow have to find a way to survive until he got his first paycheck. He looked over her head toward the barn behind her family’s house. There were plenty of barns that would be deserted after the evening milking was done. Sleeping in a haymow at this time of year would be stuffy and hot and inviting wasps to sting him, but his only other choice might be trying to find a spot under a tree where he wouldn’t be noticed. Farmers were spending more time in their fields now than in their barns.

“It’s for you if you want it.” Uncertainty tainted Grace’s voice. “For your supper. If you want it.”

He felt bad for forcing her to say the obvious. She was trying to be nice, and he was acting as if she had hidden something in the basket that would leap out and bite him.

“Don’t you want it?” she asked with a frown. “I can’t stand here all night waiting for you to make up your mind.”
