About the Book

Abigail never knew her mother, so her father is her world. Though she’s missed having a woman’s influence, she wants to grow up and be like her father–a veterinarian.

But then one summer it all changed.

It’s not what happens to you that counts, but how you deal with it. And Fred, as her dad calls her, deals with a lot.

Taking what her father and new faith has taught her, she uses her gifts of compassion and empathy to help a young girl in a desperate situation. But this time, it could cost her more than compassionate tears over an injured animal. It could cost her…her life!

On more than one occasion he was chosen to do the better jobs around the barn with Daddy while the other inmates sweated across the road dismantling our old barn. Seeing the potential, Daddy promised Philip a job when his jail term was up to help turn his life around.

My aunt Sherri always said that Daddy was a born rebel. He was always blazing a new trail and seeing things from another perspective. Sometimes Daddy would even let me skip school to go with him on important service calls to help some poor sick or injured animal, but that was to be our secret. Aunt Sherri would disapprove of all of this, but she and Daddy never saw eye to eye when it came to my raising. In fact, sometimes they would argue about how I was being raised right in front of me.

Most days after the jailer and his straw boss would bring the inmates to the house they would go straight to work, but today was different. According to Daddy, Mr. Philip seemed a bit too anxious when Daddy asked him to go dump the horses’ bedding because when he did, he never came back!
